A Look at Macular Pucker

Last updated 9 months ago

Many people have heard of macular degeneration, but they may not be aware that their symptoms could indicate another problem known as macular pucker. This condition results from the development of scar tissue on the macula of the eye due to age-related internal trauma.

Because the macula is the part of the retina responsible for clear, central vision, macular pucker can cause a noticeable loss in visual acuity. Fortunately, the condition can be treated with corrective lenses, or in severe cases, with laser retinal surgery that smooths out the macula and relieves the tension that caused the scarring in the first place.

If you have noticed that your vision seems blurry, distorted, or cloudy, be sure to visit an ophthalmologist for diagnostic testing. Call (888) 380-5289 to schedule an appointment with Newsom Eye, Tampa’s trusted center for surgical eye care.
